Gweru Naran Centre
Gweru Naran Centre school for children with hearing impairments is located at Plot 3 Sharmrock Road Ascot Gweru. The centre derives its name from the Naran family of Kwekwe who donated money through their grandparents for the re-occupation of the former T.B Convalscent Centre now so named to the Jairos Jiri Association which began operating in 1968. Gweru Naran Centre provides pre-school / Early Childhood development (ECD) to grade 7 (seven) education for children with hearing impairments, including vocational courses in carpentry, tailoring and agriculture. Gweru School for the hearing impaired is one of the biggest and of its kind in the country. The School has an annual enrollment of 200 children with hearing impairments monitored by a compliment of specialist 45 teachers. The school provides modern facilities, which are conducive for deaf learning environment, and recently an integrated scheme was introduced and this has seen some of the students admitted into ordinary schools in the surrounding areas. The centre facilitates and promotes high quality inclusive education for children with hearing impairments through provision of daily living skills, sign language, speech and auditory training. Their curriculum which is tailor made to suit the needs of children with hearing impairments focuses on promoting functionality by filling the gaps in communication and language, social skills, auditory training, vocational skills and teaching approaches. The centre provides assistive devices and learning equipment so that they fit in mainstream curriculum.
Gweru Naran centre offers hearing tests and hearing aid fitting where children are assessed before entry and will be fitted with hearing aids on entry. Children are assessed after every 3 years, tested when need arises and are also assessed for referrals. Early Childhood development (ECD) is provided to 4-5 year olds for a duration of two years to equip them with daily living skills and prepare children for formal education. The following vocational skills are offered to pupils; home economics, wood work, Metal work, Agriculture, Art and Computers. To enrich the lives of all pupils at the Centre through sport, Arts and Culture a variety of activities such as soccer, netball, athletics, volleyball, Basketball, Drama, Percussion and marimba are offered. Gweru Naran Centre acts as a resource Centre by facilitating the integration of children with hearing impairment in neighbouring regular primary and secondary schools. At these schools, deaf children are either placed on full time basis (functional integration) or partially (social) in ordinary classes and they constantly receive special instruction from the resource teachers who are specialists
